Preserving Our History for Future Generations
SaveTexasMonuments.org is working now to pass a stronger, comprehensive monument protection bill during the upcoming 90th Texas Legislature.
During the 89th Legislature, monument protection bills advanced farther than they had in years, but Texas still does not have a strong statewide law protecting historic monuments, memorials, markers, and commemorative works located on public property.
That must change.
Our proposed legislation, the Texas Historical Heritage Preservation Act, would protect historic monuments across Texas in a fair, consistent, and content-neutral way. This bill is not about one monument, one war, or one political issue. It is about preserving the physical evidence of Texas history so future generations can study, understand, and learn from it.
Protect historic monuments and memorials on public property that have stood for 40 years or more.
Create clear statewide standards before monuments can be removed, relocated, altered, concealed, or destroyed.
Allow routine maintenance, repair, restoration, and conservation.
Permit additional educational or interpretive displays without damaging or altering existing monuments.
Give citizens and the Attorney General meaningful tools to stop unlawful removals before they happen.
Create a statewide registry of protected Texas monuments and memorials.
Historic monuments are not endorsements of every person, cause, or event they commemorate. They are public historical artifacts.
Once removed, destroyed, or hidden away, they are often lost forever.
Texas history should not be rewritten by neglect, vandalism, political pressure, or temporary majorities. The better answer is preservation, education, and honest historical interpretation.
SaveTexasMonuments.org is actively seeking House and Senate sponsors for the Texas Historical Heritage Preservation Act.
We are also building a statewide coalition of historians, veterans organizations, genealogists, preservationists, civic leaders, and concerned Texans who believe our history should be preserved—not erased.
Contact your State Representative and State Senator.
Ask them to sponsor or support the Texas Historical Heritage Preservation Act in the 90th Texas Legislature.
Tell them:
Texas history belongs to future generations. Protect it now.
Texas Ranger Monument "One Riot, One Ranger" (Dallas Love Field Airport): Removed and placed in undisclosed storage. It took the efforts of private individuals to relocate the monument to Globe Life Field in Arlington.
Dallas Confederate Monument: Removed by the city, it was sold to a private group and now resides on a remote golf course in Lajitas, far from its original audience.
Alamo Cenotaph (San Antonio): Vandalized in 2020, with graffiti accusing it of "white supremacy," defacing this iconic symbol of Texas bravery.
Lawrence Sullivan Ross Monument (Texas A&M Campus): Vandalized multiple times, with paint and repeated calls for its removal threatening this tribute to a key Texas leader.
General Thomas Waul Monument (Greenville): The pink granite marker commemorating Waul’s contributions to Texas was destroyed, erasing a piece of local history.
Unknown Storage: Numerous other monuments, removed under political or social pressure, are hidden in storage with no plans for public display or relocation.
SaveTexasMonuments.org is dedicated to preserving and protecting the historical monuments, memorials, markers, and commemorative works that tell the story of Texas.
These landmarks are more than stone, bronze, and granite. They are public records of the people, events, struggles, sacrifices, and achievements that shaped the Lone Star State.
Through education, outreach, and legislative action, we are working to ensure that Texas history remains visible, accessible, and protected for generations to come.
I would keep the “Consequences of Inaction” section lower on the page, but make the top of the site focused on recruitment, sponsorship, and the 90th Session.
